Quitting smoking/vaping

Quit smoking and/or vaping

Quitting smoking and/or vaping is the best thing you can do to improve your overall health and support your recovery. Stopping is possible even if you have smoked/vaped for a long time and have tried to quit many times in the past.

It is never too late to stop.

The greater the time from when you stop, the greater the benefit:

  • Smokers who quit >4 weeks before surgery had lower risks of breathing complications than current smokers; the risk was lower still in those who quit >8 weeks before surgery
  • The risk of trouble with wound healing was less in smokers who quit >3 weeks before surgery than in current smokers.

Ask your healthcare team about quit smoking/vaping supports available to you.
